Winifred Emily Preston (Winnie) was the daughter of Harry Preston and his mistress Lily English. She was their first child.
The family took the name of Woodlands after her brother Jack was born in 1898. So Winnie grew up believing her real surname was Woodlands. It was not until she was 21, when she was required to produce her birth certificate for a job, that she discovered her birth surname was Preston.
Winnie married Richard (Dick) Thomas Harris, a stockbroker, in July 1919. They had three children together; a son Harry and two daughters, Pam and Marion.
