Lila Pamela (Lily) English was Harry Preston’s mistress with whom he had two children, Winnie and Jack. They met sometime before 1895, most likely in London at the Metropole Hotel, where she was a housekeeper.
Harry never married Lily but set her up in reasonable affluence at homes in London and later Bournemouth as well as providing an allowance to both children well into their adulthood. Lily and her two children became known as the ‘Woodlands’ family, a surname concocted by Harry.
